100 songs in 100 days … a tenth of the way there

I’m already over 10 days into my 100 songs in 100 days songwriting challenge.

So far, I’ve found this to be an extremely satisfying experience. I’m getting a large output of original music and feel myself improving exponentially at something that I am very passionate about. However, there is one concern. I fear that a large portion of these songs will never see the light of day after the challenge is complete. There might be some quality work that I overlook due to being too overwhelmed.

help me narrow down the 100 songs.

Vote your 100 songs favourite! Days 1-10

I have decided to make a Google Form to capture feedback from anyone out there in Internet world who is following my progress. I want to know which songs you really dug. Do you have a  favourite? To keep things consistent, I’m going to be making a new form every 10 days. If all goes to plan, that’s a whole album written in about 3 months with songs that are regarded by more people than myself as genuinely good songs.

I’ve also provided space for feedback and suggested writing material. This is an opportunity for me to get anyone else who is interested involved in the project.

Here’s the link to the form for Days 1-10 http://goo.gl/forms/3M3AHvbSNEwJ90Wp1

Look forward to seeing your feedback!

In my time spent exploring the internet, researching songwriters and reading independent musician blogs, I have occasionally come across something known as the 100 songs in 100 days Challenge. With this floating somewhere in the back of my mind, I sat down on Monday with my guitar, coffee and iPad. I had just finished the successful run of A Man Walks Into A Bar, performed at least 15 shows in 3 weeks, and was yearning to write some fresh material. I wrote a song that I was happy with in about 30minutes.

Then it hit me – why can’t I do this every day? Sure, there’ll be plenty of mega flops… But I’m bound to stumble onto some gold every now and then.

The 100 Songs in 100 Days Challenge has commenced.

100 songs in 100 days

Rules

With an exercise like this one, there are many ways to cheat and reach the 100 songs mark in a smaller amount of time. There are some guidelines that I need to follow in this exercise:

  1. A maximum of 1hour to write lyrics, melody, structure and record song.
  2. No lyrics can be written in advance. Everything must be created within the hour.
  3. No more than 1 song per day. Don’t want to burn out.
  4. Song must be uploaded on same day that it was written.

Here’s the Soundcloud playlist with every song that I have written for the challenge so far:

Check back to my Soundcloud page every now and then to see how I’m going. If I make something that you love, please let me know! This could be a whole new album that I’m writing in the next 3 months.

I’m also going to be putting a survey up every 10 days to find the best of song for that run. Be sure to vote and have your say.

Greetings,
Now that I’m at the 50% mark of my Pozible Campaign, it’s time for another big update.

Here’s a video:

If you decided against the video, allow me to fill you in…

New Tracks

I’ve just put out another 2 songs from the album. This makes a total of 4 songs now available for your listening pleasure. There is currently a whole new EP’s worth of music to listen to months before an official album release!

About the tracks:

Bill’s Lost Love – A dreamy, folk song with lush instrumentation and a driving narrative. This one is getting animated into a music video

Dead Man Walking – A raw, Americana style song set in the mind of a man on death row.

Freeride Train Blues – A slow-driving acoustic blues featuring banjo, upright bass and dobro.

Set in Stone (feat. Alison Avron) – A duet about new love, featuring the wonderful talents of Alison Avron. And also violin, cello, piano. Here’s a link to Alison Avron’s website.

New Pozible Reward

Against my better judgement, I’ve decided to add a reward to this campaign which has the potential to end me. For $40, I’m giving people the opportunity to request any song they like. Anything. I will then learn that song, record it for youtube, and dedicate it to you at the beginning of the video. As I said, I’m willing to learn any song. This is a golden opportunity at an extremely fair price. Go to the page and scroll down the right column until you see the reward. OK GO.

 A Name for the Album

I’ve officially decided on a name for my debut album. It’s called… drum roll……. ‘Set in Stone‘. Named after one of the tracks that I’ve put out today, I chose it because the title simply fit. This album was always going to be called ‘Set  in Stone’, I just didn’t know it yet.

::::TLDR::::

** New Music! There are now officially 4 songs up and listenable for this album.
** New $40 reward where you can request ANY song and I’ll learn it, record it, dedicate to you on Youtube.
** The album is now called ‘Set in Stone’.

Finally, Thank You to everyone that has supported this project so far! If you haven’t yet and intend on doing so, don’t delay! …And tell your friends! With your support, we can reach this goal.

Help me reach my Pozible Campaign target and pledge!
