About the Album
For Stare Into The Dark, I returned to Chris Gillespie’s Blue Sky Recording Studio in the Blue Mountains. It was recorded completely live over a three day period with a killer band. Unlike previous projects, I wanted to take more of a back seat in arranging and received plenty of input from all members of the Stare Into The Dark band.
The band featured:
The majority of tracks from the album are also the fully-realised results from the 100 songs in 100 days songwriting challenge that I undertook back in 2016. For me, the arranging, recording and release of these songs signals a bittersweet close to that project/experiment.
I’m stoked with the result and I can’t wait to share it with you.
100 songs in 100 days … a tenth of the way there
I’m already over 10 days into my 100 songs in 100 days songwriting challenge.
So far, I’ve found this to be an extremely satisfying experience. I’m getting a large output of original music and feel myself improving exponentially at something that I am very passionate about. However, there is one concern. I fear that a large portion of these songs will never see the light of day after the challenge is complete. There might be some quality work that I overlook due to being too overwhelmed.
help me narrow down the 100 songs.
I have decided to make a Google Form to capture feedback from anyone out there in Internet world who is following my progress. I want to know which songs you really dug. Do you have a favourite? To keep things consistent, I’m going to be making a new form every 10 days. If all goes to plan, that’s a whole album written in about 3 months with songs that are regarded by more people than myself as genuinely good songs.
I’ve also provided space for feedback and suggested writing material. This is an opportunity for me to get anyone else who is interested involved in the project.

Look forward to seeing your feedback!
In my time spent exploring the internet, researching songwriters and reading independent musician blogs, I have occasionally come across something known as the 100 songs in 100 days Challenge. With this floating somewhere in the back of my mind, I sat down on Monday with my guitar, coffee and iPad. I had just finished the successful run of A Man Walks Into A Bar, performed at least 15 shows in 3 weeks, and was yearning to write some fresh material. I wrote a song that I was happy with in about 30minutes.
Then it hit me – why can’t I do this every day? Sure, there’ll be plenty of mega flops… But I’m bound to stumble onto some gold every now and then.
The 100 Songs in 100 Days Challenge has commenced.
With an exercise like this one, there are many ways to cheat and reach the 100 songs mark in a smaller amount of time. There are some guidelines that I need to follow in this exercise:
- A maximum of 1hour to write lyrics, melody, structure and record song.
- No lyrics can be written in advance. Everything must be created within the hour.
- No more than 1 song per day. Don’t want to burn out.
- Song must be uploaded on same day that it was written.
Here’s the Soundcloud playlist with every song that I have written for the challenge so far:
Check back to my Soundcloud page every now and then to see how I’m going. If I make something that you love, please let me know! This could be a whole new album that I’m writing in the next 3 months.
I’m also going to be putting a survey up every 10 days to find the best of song for that run. Be sure to vote and have your say.
